Day 9: Andenes Bird Safari

Standard

Where: Andenes to just north of Nordmela, Andøy
Distance: 30.9 km
Time on bike: 1 hr 55 min
Total distance: 644 km

Bird safari day! Andøya is famous for its abundance of birds. The puffin, in particular. There is an estimated 150 000 puffins coming up to this particular area to breed. They dig deep holes where they lay their eggs in order to protect them from the massive white tipped eagles that are also in the same area. The female eagles can get up to 12 kg! In addition to multiple (as in thousands of) puffins and many eagles, we also saw black guillemot, common guillemot, common eider, razorbill penguins and others I cannot name.

Our knowledgable Dutch captain made it a fun, educational and thrilling trip. We loved it!

In the evening, we biked trough magical mystery landscapes in the misty fog.

We came upon a strange landscape and called a small part of it home. We set up camp, ate up and enjoyed the scene then huddled in the tent for a good night’s sleep.
