With three weeks off work over Christmas and New Years, we were quick to make plans – quick plans! Over the course of three weeks we celebrated Christmas with my family, Norwegian Style. We then proceeded to hop over the pond to Canada in time for some Canadian Christmas cheers and celebrations before venturing on to some fun in the sun and reunion with friends in El Salvador.
After a bit of trouble getting around on bikes in the Bergen area, we were pleased to find that Stavanger had done a great job with bike paths (ones that make sense and do not end without warning). We were also thoroughly happy to find that summer had arrived in Stavanger!
Where: Just outside Leknes to Stamsund, Lofoten
Distance: 18.5 km
Time on bike: 1 hr 40 min
Total distance: 901 km
The ferry arrived at Prince Rupert just after 1 am Saturday morning. We were asleep as the ferry reached the dock, but somehow woke up and were the last car off the boat. The Canadian border crossing was right as we were on dry land. Only a few minutes later, we were back in Canada! What a whirlwind of a trip to Alaska!
While Kyler attended the stag party in Fernie, I easily entertained myself and …wait for it… set a World Record while I was at it!
After many months on the road, most of them in the tropics, we are back in the country of maple syrup, (ice) hockey, toques, Kokanee, “Eh”s, mountains, plains, mega-friendly people, red and black plaid shirts, poutine, Tim Hortons, Nanaimo bars, camp fires, beavers and bears – you guessed it: Canada!
The border crossing from Costa Rica was fairly straight-forward, we are getting pretty good at the game! Our first stop in Nicaragua on our drive North, was stunning Popoyo on the Pacific Coast. The drive along lake Nicaragua to Rivas was pretty, and as we got closer to Popoyo, the road became smaller – and smaller.
Since last report, we have been to San Jose to drop off Arlene, Ellie and Todd (buen viaje!). My dad and his girlfriend, Bente, flew in from Norway and the four of us returned to the Caribbean for some more waves, sun and fun.
While my dad and Bente decided to go spend the day in Bocas del Toro, Panama, Kyler and I took great advantage of the beautiful weather. We had already been running and surfing before most people even considered getting up!
Gotta love early mornings!
